Distribution of plastic ban stickers and cloth bags on Environment Day


Reporting an environmental awareness LED display and releasing single-use plastic (SUP) prohibition stickers were among the various programs held recently as part of World Environment Day celebrations. . The Department of Science, Technology and Environment and the Pollution Control Committee of Pondicherry co-hosted a variety of events from June 2 to mark the occasion. This year’s theme was “Only One Earth”, focusing on sustainable living in harmony with nature. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy signaled an environmental awareness van attended by Annibal Kennedy, MLA, R. Smitha, Secretary of STEC and other officials. The Chief Minister also released the 2021-22 Environmental Investigation Report and distributed prizes to winners of various competitions. A Tamil Pattimandram chaired by speaker Kalaimamani Solomon Pappaiah and his team on the theme ‘Is the major role in environmental protection of public government?’ was another highlight. Events held during the four days of celebrations included the distribution of cloth bags as part of the Swachhta action plan and the handing over of automatic disinfectants and bags of non-chlorinated biomedical waste to the Department of Health. Volunteers also undertook a mangrove clean-up activity in Thengaithittu Lagoon near Murungapakkam arts and crafts village with the participation of NGOs. R. Baskar, Member of Parliament for Aryankuppam Constituency, opened the event. A tree planting campaign was also carried out at the Arts and Crafts Village and Lawspet Women’s Polytechnic.
