BARAMULLA: A month-long celebration to commemorate World Environment Day 2022 ended in Sopore here today.

In this regard, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, Dr. Syed Sehrish Asgar, along with other district dignitaries, today visited Sopore where she conducted several activities aimed at raising awareness on the importance of protection of the environment.

On occasion, DC ran an anti-polythene campaign in Sopore’s main market where cloth and paper bags were distributed against polythenes to the general public and asked to adopt eco-friendly alternatives in their daily life.

The DC also interacted with local merchants and asked them to play a vital role in eradicating the threat of polythene carrier bags in the city.

Later, the DC chaired a Cum Awareness Camp seminar at Dak Bungalow Sopore where PRIs, civil society members, traders and students showed their enthusiastic participation. The program was organized by the Sopore Municipal Committee.

During the program, the Chairman of Sopore Municipal Committee, through a Power Point presentation, rated DC regarding the Sopore Town Profile outlining the culture and heritage of the area. President MC also presented the development scenario of the city of Sopore.

In his remarks, the DC said that the most important objective of organizing the seminar was not only to raise awareness on various environmental issues and to highlight the measures that are being initiated to manage natural resources in the district. , but also to recognize and encourage a proactive behavior of individuals towards the preservation and protection of the environment.

On occasion, Tehsildars and senior staff have been tasked with identifying other dump sites in the area to ensure proper waste management.

During the program, the keys to two hoppers were handed over to the Sopore Municipal Committee to address the shortage while managing the waste in the area.

While complementing the Sopore Municipal Committee for organizing such a mega seminar, the DC has sought active cooperation from all stakeholders to play a proactive role in keeping the environment clean and raising people’s awareness. in this regard.

Meanwhile, the students performed skits occasionally, through which awareness was spread among the participants regarding environmental protection, and the same was highly applauded by the participants.

Additionally, a congratulation program was also held where students were congratulated with certificates and cash prizes.
