Tegucigalpa, September 27, 2020. – With the firm commitment to comply with its environmental responsibility and overcome the challenges of the new normal, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) has ratified for the third consecutive year the Environmental Management System Certification -EMS- ISO 14001 : 2015, with zero non-compliance on the part of the certification body, which is rare in this type of process and which demonstrates the maturity reached by the establishment.
The ratification of the ISO 14001: 2015 Environmental Management System Certification was granted after the follow-up audit of this tool, which aims to reduce the environmental impacts in the administrative and operational activities carried out in the headquarters building.
“This achievement is very significant because it reaffirms our institution’s commitment to promote sustainable management, by giving the example of consistency between what we promote and what we experience, with actions that reflect our Policy in practice. Environmental and Social, as well as the Institutional Strategy, “ said CABEI Executive Chairman Dr Dante Mossi.
During this period, the activities were subjected to an atypical time, due to the conditions generated by the pandemic, which caused important changes both in the way of working and in the conditioning of the facilities within the framework of strict biosecurity standards. .
One of the challenges, in these circumstances, was the alignment of the objectives assumed in the EMS which concern the consumption of water, electricity, the production of waste and their adjustment during the year, whereas we have learned to live with the pandemic.
In this process, the participation of all the members of the institution was decisive, in particular the support of the top management and the support of each collaborator, which make possible the efficient management of resources by assuming it as a personal and voluntary responsibility. .
“We received the news of the renewal of this certification with great joy because it is the fruit of the institutional efforts that have been made constantly. I believe that it is perseverance that has led us to this new result”, commented Evelyn, collaborator from Vermont. López, who sees himself as part of this initiative.
ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT BEYOND THE BCIE HEADQUARTERS
Certification of the headquarters building as environmentally sustainable is part of CABEI’s Environmental and Social Policy, which establishes the guidelines that ensure that the operations financed by the Bank and the operational activities for its own functioning are environmentally and socially sustainable, contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions and the promotion of resilience to climate change.
This is why another challenge within the new work model characterized by teleworking has been the promotion of the experience of environmental engagement beyond the headquarters. That is to say, continue with good practices to reduce and mitigate the environmental footprint wherever everyone grows.
“The institutional effort is several years old and leads us to take personal awareness and therefore apply it in all areas of life, in the workplace, at home and wherever we go. At home, for example, we take advantage of food waste to make homemade compost for our plants and we’ve seen the good effects, ”said Lopez from Vermont.
The satisfaction of the accomplishment leads to a period of new challenges in the management of the EMS certification, which is very close to the extension of its scope to the CABEI office in El Salvador, which already has a LEED certification. Gold (in energy) and later to its other facilities.
As the project progresses, the challenge remains to meet the 2021 goals, in order to continue to have a daily impact on the Central American region through a commitment to environmental sustainability.
