Kerala youth plant ganja on World Environment Day, excise department not amused

The saplings, 60 cm and 30 cm long respectively, were found on the road between the Kurishadi junction in Kandachira and the ring road.

It was June 5, World Environment Day, when people from all over the world were planting trees and saplings. On the same day, in a village called Kandachira in Kerala’s Kollam, a few individuals planted cannabis by the side of the road and said it was a plant they liked. At least that was the account of an eyewitness when he informed the excise department. A team led by Sub-Inspector T Rajeev of the Kollam Excise Special Squad found saplings, 60 cm and 30 cm long respectively, on the road between the Kurishadi junction in Kandachira and the ring road.

It was the inspector of the circle of the special squad of Kollam Excise I Noushad who was informed by a witness of the incident. He was also told that a young man “addicted to ganja” led a few others to plant on World Environment Day. “Let this plant grow here,” the men apparently said before planting the two saplings there and photographing them on their phones. These ganja lovers have yet to be caught.

There was a similar tip that ganja plants were also seen under the Mangad bypass bridge. However, the Excise team could not find any cannabis plants there. But there were signs that cannabis had been planted there earlier. “We also got information that the factories were being maintained by a resident of Kandachira who was previously involved in a ganja case,” the Excise statement said.

The accused will soon be arrested, deputy excise commissioner B Suresh informed. “We believe the ganja lobby is trying new methods because there is a lockdown and they cannot travel to other states to bring in ganja from there,” the statement said.

In April, four people were arrested at a hotel in Ernakulam for possession of MDMA (commonly known as ecstasy or molly) and ganga in a joint Kochi excise and customs operation.
