Panaji: As the state experiences conflicts for the protection of its environment, the University of Goa is preparing to add two new postgraduate programs in due course. Starting in the 2021-22 academic year, the university will offer a master’s program as well as a master’s program in environmental science, a first in the state.
The programs will each have an intake of 16 students, including the quota for the economically backward category.
During the two-year programs, students will study some core courses in the first year, but in the second year, they will be allowed to choose from 26 optional subjects for in-depth study. Topics will include environmental policy, marine pollution, water resource management, disaster management, energy, solid and hazardous waste management, polar studies and environmental history of India, among others .
GU officials said the world is facing environmental degradation on a scale like never before. The objective of the program is to train people in the field of policy making, mitigation, conservation and disaster management and to fill the gap of experts to carry out tasks such as studies. environmental impact assessment.
While those from any discipline can join the masters program, those who wish to enroll in the masters must have a graduate degree in science, engineering, or medicine.
Students will be selected to join the program based on the University of Goa Admissions Ranking Test. Fieldwork will be an important component of the program, along with lab work, modeling and simulation studies, GU officials said.
Although both programs are primarily offered within the School of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, the masters and masters programs will be multidisciplinary in nature, will be faculty-based. and the expertise of different GU departments, including the Faculty of Life Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, Goa Business School, Manohar Parrikar School of Law, Governance and Public Policy and School of Chemical Sciences.
The fees for the master’s program are Rs 10,500 and those for the MSc are Rs 16,700.
