Michael A. Mikolanis has been appointed director of the energy and environment department of the Los Alamos field office. The appointment was announced at the Northern New Mexico Citizens Advisory Council virtual meeting on Wednesday afternoon.
Mikolanis is a general engineer with 33 years of engineering experience associated with government and commercial nuclear facilities. Since 2017, he has been the Deputy Director of Nuclear Material Stabilization for the DOE Savannah River Operations Office at the Savannah River site in Aiken, South Carolina, where he is in charge of activities related to receiving, storage , stabilization and disposal of nuclear waste. materials, spent nuclear fuel, by-products and activities for the Savannah River National Laboratory and several analytical laboratories at the Savannah River site. Mikolanis has also served as Deputy Director of Infrastructure and Environmental Stewardship, Chief Site Engineer and Director of the Waste Disposal Engineering Division at Savannah River.
Mikolanis has also served as ministerial representative responsible for issues in the office of the Under-Secretary of Energy, responsible for overseeing engineering and nuclear safety activities at facilities that process and dispose of transuranic and high-level liquid wastes. He has also been a primary interface with the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Council and was frequently called upon to provide leadership and technical expertise on issues that affect facilities and organizations across the DOE complex.
Mikolanis also served in the US Navy’s submarine service as a certified naval nuclear engineer officer. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering from Purdue University and a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology as well as a Bachelor of Professional Engineering in the State of Maryland.
