Qatar Airways Group Highlights Sustainability Initiatives on World Environment Day

QATAR. Qatar Airways Group celebrated World Environment Day on June 5 by highlighting its key initiatives in environmental sustainability and its mission to “protect the planet”.

The group said it is dedicated to environmental leadership across all of its entities, including airlines, airport operations, aviation and food services, outlets and hotels.

Qatar Airways is the first airline in the Middle East to achieve accreditation at the highest level of the IATA Environmental Assessment Program (IEnvA).

Meanwhile, its hub, Hamad International Airport (HIA), is set to become the first airport in the Middle East region to achieve a 4-star rating from the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) as part of the plans to expand its capacity to over 53 million. passengers per year by 2022.

HIA’s terminal will also become a LEED Silver certified building, featuring a number of innovative energy efficiency measures.

Qatar Airways has also signed up as The oneworld member airline with net zero carbon emissions by 2050, part of the first global alliance to unite behind a common goal to achieve carbon neutrality.

State-of-the-art aviation technology and the airline’s fuel optimization initiatives are part of an overall strategy to tackle its CO emissions2 and continues to comply with the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and the ICAO Carbon Offsetting and Reduction System for International Aviation (CORSIA).
