Zulal Wellness Resort celebrates World Environment Day

* Launch of the mangrove conservation program in northern Qatar

Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som marked the celebrations for World Environment Day and revealed its “unique environmental initiatives shaping the sustainable future of the regional hospitality industry”.
“In line with this mission, the Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som presents its plans to strengthen local ecosystems and raise awareness among its clients and the wider Qatari community of environmental issues with the launch of its mangrove conservation program in the north of Qatar, “according to a press release.
Implemented in partnership with the resort developer Msheireb Properties, Qatar’s leading sustainable real estate developer, the on-site mangrove conservation program aims to protect local marine life.
Maryam Sultan al-Jassim, Head of Communications and Public Relations, Msheireb Properties said: “Msheireb Properties is proud to have this partnership with Zulal Wellness Resort to raise awareness on very important and critical topics in Qatar. The mangroves are a main component of our natural beauty and it is our responsibility to be part of the national effort to preserve them. This clearly reflects our vision to protect our environment and adhere to best sustainability practices in all of our developments. The new program will have a positive impact on our community and complements our long-term strategy of preserving our natural resources for generations to come.
For the first time in Qatar, guests will have the opportunity to plant mangroves to mark their visits and be part of this initiative. The program will also involve Zulal employees, partners and stakeholders, becoming a true community initiative, the statement added.
Commenting on the resort’s approach to sustainability, Zulal Wellness Resort General Manager Daniele Vastolo said: “Sustainability is at the heart of Zulal Wellness Resort’s mission, and we are deeply committed to the preservation and the development of local ecosystems and awareness of biodiversity and environmental management. With the mangrove plantation site located in the immediate vicinity of the seaside resort, this initiative will help improve air quality and create a favorable environment for local fauna and increase species diversity. It will also be a unique and environmentally friendly experience, promoting the conservation of mangroves and creating a new ecotourism attraction in Qatar “.
Zulal Wellness Resort’s mangrove conservation program is also part of a larger resort sustainability policy and will be combined with other initiatives including beach clean-up, implementation of sustainable practices and the use of ecological and local products. In line with the Qatar National Vision 2030 which emphasizes the importance of environmental management, as well as objectives 1 and 2 of the Qatar National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan 2015- 2025, aimed at increasing public awareness and participation in biodiversity conservation, the Zulal Mangrove Conservation Initiative will also contribute to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 (UNSDG), urging to “conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development ”.
A cornerstone of marine biodiversity, mangroves provide feeding and nesting habitats for many species of birds, fish, crustaceans and other organisms of ecological and commercial importance.
Mangroves are of paramount importance for local ecosystems, but also for populations. Providing natural infrastructure and protecting neighboring areas by preventing erosion and absorbing the impacts of storm surges during extreme weather events, they also support the livelihoods of local communities through fishing and ecotourism, because it is estimated that 80% of the world’s fish catch depends on mangrove forests in one form or another.
